Blue Flux - Just Dreams
(2004)
Enthalpy Records (ER CD11)
Total Time = 55.00
|
After an almost three-year hiatus, a new album at last. Completed in
July
2004, Just Dreams bears the fruits of all labour that
went
into the construction of our new Groundhog
Studio. The album positively bristles with new ideas, and features
intricately woven arrangements, fluid and highly dynamic grooves,
cutting-edge
effects, and of course the delicate trademark acoustic-and-electric
guitar
work.
One-and-a-half years of intense effort has yielded a musical package
that stands out. Though steeped in the same Atmospheric Rock tradition
as The Beach (1999), Just Dreams is perhaps more
revealing,
accessible, and detailed. But judge for yourself - the featured audio
clips
should provide a representative cross-section of this album.

The Steely Feel - here it is! This
Blue Flux album was recorded at Piglet Studio
in
Cologne,
and features only guitars, bass, and the occasional percussive
instrument.
But Sugarbeat is far from being a solo-instrument
focussed
album. Most compositions are multi-layered, with subtle ambiences,
footstomping
drive, and plenty of grit. All compositions are brand new, with the
exception
of Valley of the Bells, Blue Flux's guitar arrangement of the
lovely
Maurice Ravel original, and Blue Flux's version of Scarborough Fair,
the only vocal piece, which provides an enchanting end to the album.
If you liked the organic guitar feel of previous Blue Flux
albums,
you're
going to love Sugarbeat.

Blue Flux - Millions Are
Numb
(1999)
Enthalpy Records (ER CD08)
Total Time = 40.31
|
What started out as a quick mood piece to combat the Millennium Hype
quickly
took on a mind of its own, and metamorphosed into Bridging The Gap,
a near 15 minute piece with plenty atmosphere and drive, and a kickass
middle section. The much shorter Radio Mix features a different intro,
and extra effects.
The other three tracks, although previously released, have been
re-mastered
for this mini-album.

Released October 99, and one and a half years in the making, a lot of
work
has gone into making this CD the definitive Blue Flux album for the
second
Millennium. The first half consists of atmospheric vocal pieces like The
Big Sleep and Atlantis, and the more aggressive rock ballad
Mary's
Notes (one of the favourites at MP3.Com). It also contains the
in-yer-face
guitar bravado of Dream Catcher, as well as the suspense-ridden
soundtrack work Committed.
1000 Years is a labour of love, very pertinent to the
change
of Millennium, and full of surprises. A very honest composition that
cannot
be described in a few sentences.
This album also for the first time features original artwork
for
each
track, some of which can be seen in thumbnail format below.

Blue Flux - The Riddle
(1997)
Enthalpy Records (ER CD06)
Total Time = 56.01
|
This CD is a good cross section of what Blue Flux's music is all about.
It features some slick and upbeat instrumental tracks like Skating
Away,
passionate and atmospheric vocal pieces such as Remember Innocence
and Deep Water, and tracks that are dedicated to single
instruments
like Piglet Polka (guitar) and 100 Miles (piano). And
then
there's The Riddle itself, a 25 minute tour de force, but
really
consisting of 4 individual parts, each with its very own character. The
Riddle tells a story, both through lyrics and sound, of inner
values,
and time, 'the ancient ghost we fear the most'.

Blue Flux - Departures
(1996)
Enthalpy Records (ER CD05)
Total Time = 58.15
|
Not surprisingly, Departures was inspired by travels to
Indonesia.
This is an entirely instrumental album, with lots of atmosphere, quiet
passages and plenty acoustic guitar. Very soundtrack-like in places,
unfortunately
no one has found a film to go with it yet ...

Blue Flux - Soul Mining
(1995)
Enthalpy Records (ER CD04)
Total Time = 49.29
|
The first 6 tracks on this album are fairly upbeat and dynamic, with
the
exception of After Hours, which is very moody and wide open, to
portray 'that late night feeling'. Soul Mining is an extremely
atmospheric
and slowly evolving piece, with lots of tension and many surprises.
Blue
Flux's first attempt at a 20+ minutes composition, this one remains a
classic.

Blue Flux - Glass Walls
(1994)
Enthalpy Records (ER CD03)
Total Time = 56.34
- Divertimento
(3.25)
- Talk to me (4.50)
- Glass
Walls
(5.53)
- Celebration (5.10)
- Starry Night (2.55)
- Penal Star Freighter (5.15)
|
- Heatwave (5.30)
- No Sweat (2.28)
- Turtle Ballet (3.31)
- Autumn Burst (4.10)
- Winter
(7.20)
- Coming Home (6.07)
|
|
Glass Walls is uncompromising in its style and
commitment
to each track. The driving rhythms of the title track are offset
against
the all-out science fiction soundtrack qualities of Penal Star
Freighter.
This album includes 2 vocal compositions, Talk to me and Coming
Home.

Blue Flux - The 7th Wave
(1993)
Enthalpy Records (ER CD02)
Total Time = 54.07
- Hard Work (4.58)
- United we stand (4.37)
- Face in the Crowd (4.20)
- Night Flight (5.46)
- Sublevel 4 (4.48)
- Midnight Vows (5.18)
|
- Other
Worlds
(4.45)
- On the Road again (2.55)
- Thru' the Waterfall (3.12)
- Dreaming
of Sleep
(6.05)
- For a Friend (3.06)
- The 7th
Wave
(4.17)
|
|
This album is fairly synthesizer oriented, and uses a good deal of wave
sequencing from the then relatively new Korg Wavestation. Quite pacey
in
places, but The 7th Wave also features some very subtle
and
ambient tracks like Sublevel 4 and Dreaming of Sleep.
The
title track is very mysterious and slowly builds to a final crescendo.

Below are some comments made about Blue
Flux in
the
printed and online music media.
"The production throughout is excellent ... a fine use of
space
and
depth giving great clarity to each of the recordings"
"This isn't pop, this isn't muzak. In fact, I'm buggered if I know
what it is, but it's good !"
Andrew Jones, Home and Studio Recording Magazine, August 93

"Ambient guitar with lots of reverb sits well against the
synthesized
backing, and the solos all demonstrate a high standard of musicianship."
"All the sounds have been well chosen, the arrangement is good
(and
unpredictable), and obviously a lot of thought has gone into the
excellent
production"
John Harris, Sound
on Sound Magazine, January 94
"The standard of mixing ... is consistently excellent ..."
"The second feather in Blue Flux's cap is their sheer
musicality.
They bring dynamics into their writing, so that the compositions are
full
of light and shade."
John Harris, Sound on Sound Magazine, October 95

Mary's Notes - "Pretty sweet song, I love the guitar
sound,
very impressive recording quality." ... "Grrreat. Production is superb.
Class all over, truly excellent"
Blue Monday - "... left me spellbound. Absolutely
beautiful.
This sounds totally original, yet it's got smatterings of various
guitar
monsters all over it."
Your Last Chance - "The melding of guitar and
keyboard is
just as sweet as you're ever likely to hear" ... "Bags of atmosphere
...
The bowed string section is way cool."
